FACULTY GUIDE

The MTEL Faculty Guide is designed to assist educator preparation program faculty and staff in helping licensure candidates to prepare to take the test(s).

The guide and three of the appendices are provided in PDF format. To view or print the PDF files, you will need Adobe Acrobat® Reader v5.0 or higher installed on your computer. After opening the guide, click on the "Bookmarks" tab to view any available bookmarks.

MTEL Faculty Guide (PDF document) contains information about the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure program, its basis and alignment with the Massachusetts Regulations for Educator Licensure and the learning standards in the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, the structure of the tests, and the uses of the test objectives and reports prepared for candidates and educator preparation programs.

Appendix A: Worksheets (PDF document)   Appendix A provides tools to assist candidates in evaluating their preparation to test, developing a study plan, and reviewing test-taking strategies.

Appendix B: Scoring Rubrics for Holistically Scored Open-Response Items (PDF document)   Appendix B provides the set of scoring rubrics applied to the scoring process for holistically scored open-response items, including the performance characteristics and scoring scales.

Appendix C: Sample Open-Response Items and Responses (PDF document)   Appendix C provides sample open-response items with corresponding sample responses at each score point level and includes an analysis of each response to explain whether scoring criteria were met.

Appendix D: Questions and Answers   Appendix D provides links to information available on the MTEL web site to assist faculty in answering candidate questions about the MTEL tests. Additional information is available at the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's web site at www.doe.mass.edu/mtel.
